La Salle Gets The Job Done!

La Salle Gets The Job Done!

La Salle starts out slow but confident.  Norbert Torres breaks the ice.  Early on, Norbert is dominating the boards and Teng is driving to the basket.  It looks like Norbert is showing some new found strength as he is defending and rebounding with authority.

Adamson looks tight.  They are giving La Salle the opportunities with turnovers and missed foul shots.  So far, the Archers are not getting the turnover points.

Then Norbert Torres starts to show that the Bear is no longer hibernating.  He, along with LA Revilla and Joshua Webb lead an 11 -0 run.  Again, La Salle’s bench comes alive.  In addition, the defense is really tight.  Adamson has to work hard to get points.  The Falcons only shot 3 of 17 in the first quarter

The first quarter ends with La Salle on top, 17 –8.

The 2nd quarter again starts slow until Van Opstal gets a put back. However La Salle’s defense was stifling.  Midway through the 2nd quarter, the Green Archers were holding Adamson to only 17% field goal shooting.

Then Adamson hits 2 straight treys and La Salle’s lead is down to 4.  La Salle maintains its poise and was not perturbed.  They hit 7 straight points and their lead balloons back to 11.

Then the refs take over with some ticky tack fouls and non-calls .  Adamson scores 5 straight points and La Salle ends the quarter on top, 27 -21.

The first half was all about defense for La Salle.  All but 2 points for Adamson were scored from the outside while La Salle scored 17 points from the inside, including a monstrous dunk by Arnold Van Opstal.

The 3rd quarter is again a slow start for La Salle.  Three minutes into the quarter, Adamson goes on a 4 -0 run and the lead is down to 2.  La Salle’s first points of the quarter come on an Andrada split from the line.

Unexpectedly, La Salle goes on a full court press and after Teng scores 2 from the foul line, Vosotros steals and passes to Teng for another 2.  Then Vosotros hits  back to back 3s and La Salle is up by 13.

The defense is awesome as La Salle gets one steal after another.  Norbert Torres suddenly flexes his muscles and shows emotion.  He is a monster under the boards.

Adamson goes on a 7 -2 run to bring the lead down 9.  With the quarter coming to an end, Thomas Torres gets into the action to hit a 3 with almost no time remaining.  The 3rd quarter ends with LA Salle on top 49 -37.

The final quarter starts tentative for La Salle.  Adamson cuts the lead to 9 but Thomas Torres again comes to the rescue with a 3.  Then Jeron Teng splits the defense to make the shot and then sinks the and 1.

The refs had to get into the action again.  They started with antics of thin calls for both sides.  This caused both teams to lose the momentum that was making it a good game.

With less than 4 minutes to play and La salle leading by 11, Adamson refuses to fold.  It was a good thing that La Salle was hitting their foul shots to stay on top.  Adamson scores and Jeron Teng split his foul shot and the lead is down to 10.

With time down to less than 3 minutes and La Salle leading by 10, Adamson does not give up.  They make one last stand but they cannot make the shots.  Norbert Torres gets fouled but misses both free throws.  Adamson is fouled and they too miss both.

Adamson steals and they score on a fast break.  Two minutes left and La Salle is only up by 8.  Then the defense takes over.  A defensive stop by la Salle and an Andrada under goal stab brings the lead up to 10 again.  Then Teng gets a steal and throws a perfect pass to a streaking Vosostros and the lead is up to 12.

With Andrada scoring another under the goal shot and a Jeron Teng steal and 2 foul shots seals the win for La Salle.  There was a scare though as Teng hit the floor hard and the entire La Salle gallery was holding its breath.

Final score 72 – 59.  Now La Salle waits for the result of the FEU – NU replay.

La Salle’s game was not as crisp as their last game against FEU but it showed that the Green Archers have depth.  There was balanced scoring with Teng, Norbert Torres and  Vosotros carrying the load but Thomas Torres, LA Revilla and Andrada contributed too.

I never thought I would ever say this but La Salle finally shot well from the free throw line.  Teng has improved his free throws immensely and was 9 out of 12 from the line.  He also had 9 assists.  He is definitely developing into a complete player.

Norbert Torres finally showed what he needs to do.  Forget the post up plays, just rebound and and make the put backs.  Today he had 14 rebounds.

What amazed me the most was the La Salle defense.  Switching from a full court press to a zone confused Adamson’s offense.  In the game against FEU, the offense clicked but in today’s game, it was the defense that stood out.

I hope the UAAP Board realizes what a mess they have caused.  They are the ones that are determining the outcome of the Final Four.  This should have been over if they did not dip their fingers where it did not belong.  They robbed FEU and La Salle of an outright entry into the Final Four.

Maybe next year the meaning of UAAP will be changed to UNIVERTIES ALL ABOUT PROTESTS.  These protests do not only happen in basketball but also in the other UAAP sports.  It is only because of the high visibility of basketball that people take notice, but it has happened in football, baseball and volleyball.  Like I said in one of my tweets, it may even happen in the upcoming cheer dance competition.

What the Board did to the father of Nico Salva was another snafu.  By defending his son against an irate coach of FEU, he was penalized by barring him from sitting in the patron seats as well as the player's area.  I am no Nico Salva fan but I am a father who will defend my son to the death.  How can the Board slap this action on the elder Salva?  It is absurd.  We all now have to be careful in UAAP games.  If someone protests that the person next to him laid a fart, that person may be barred from watching games.

The UST protest has been thrown out but if the Board followed the same reasoning that they did when they upheld NU’s protest, then UST should have won the protest.  However common sense is not so common in the UAAP.

Now the entire Lasallian community is hoping for an FEU win to get an outright berth in the Final Four.  I am hoping for an FEU win for another reason.  It is called poetic justice.  I wonder what NU will protest about again if they lose the game against FEU.

Kudos to Rico Maierhofer, TY Tang, JV Casio, Mac Cardona, Joseph Yeo and JR Aquino for taking time out to practice with the team before today’s game.  This is a great example that these players showed.  I got to talk to Coach Gee on Wednesday and he told me that it was not the coaching staff that asked them to scrimmage with the team.  He said that they did this on their own.  In fact there were other players who wanted to join but could not make it because of conflict of schedules with their PBA team practices.

I really held my breath there for a minute when Jeron fell hard.. glad that he is okay!

Regarding our super rookie, I think the only thing stopping him from being the absolute monster that he can be is his inconsistent jumper. If he can hit those j's consistently, boy we will be champs next season no doubt!

Whatever happened to tallo!

Nice game archers! Mr. Toby, is mark tallo injured or is he out of the team? He did not play against adamson, and i saw a pic from the practice with the former archers, he was not there either. What happened to him??

I am sorry but I cannot comment on the status of Tallo. It would be unfair to him.

No problem sir! I was just disappointed in not seeing him play today. I'm a fan of mr. Tallo. Well anyway, hope to see him in play soon! Thank you very much mr. Tony!

Another good read sir! Looking forward to your next ones. Anyway you forgot to mention Joseph Yeo who I think was part of the group of former Archers who practiced with the team. More power Mr. Atayde!
Animo!

I hope Tallo didn't pack his bags and
Leave for Cebu, like what he did to Ateneo last year...

The difference that I see with Jeron from Kiefer and Parks is that Jeron has more room to improve. The style of play of Ravena and Parks looks complete. But the scary thing with Jeron is that he is this good so early in his college career. Then there's the fact that he can still improve on the outside shots, defense, and even post up plays. He might turn out to be the best among the three.

Oh and Sir, Joseph Yeo was also in the practice with the other alumni. It feels awesome that they are willing to give time to help the younger players. Truly One La Salle!

Hi Sir Tony,

This might rub you the wrong way so I apologize in advance, based on your answer that "you can't comment on Tallo's status" I take it that there's something else happening other than him being sick. Can you confirm? Will we still see him in a DLSU basketball uniform?

*LOLs at the new meaning of uaap*

was that a great game.or what? (lol.excited much) whew! let me.just say, the Bear is definitely done hibernating! i've never seen Norbert with such confidence ever.. 'til now. sarap lang gawan ng gif image yung "roars" niya kanina hehehe. surely one of the many unforgettable moments earlier. at iba talaga pag live!

the win was of course appreciated. but deeeyymmm those refs! i don't even know where to start! isang malaking "haaay" nalang. i can't explain how angry i was when adu players fouled.jeron, hard! parang binura ang mukha ng bago nating idol eh. (sorry i think i'm still too affected even just recalling it, but.. yeah affected talaga ako)

i just wish it won't be the same in the next games and future seasons (protests, questionable.calls/noncalls,etc)

Wasn't Joseph Yeo also included in those former Archers who joined the team's practice?

That was one of the best games of the dlsu green archers this season. Offensively and defensively they made this game a nightmare for the falcons. But the tempo of the games slowed down drastically because of the calls of the refs. As a cebuano, I am also wondering where tallo is,is he still in the line upr. Atayde? If you couldn't answer that, is he still affiliated with dlsu? It bothers me

I always enjoy reading your blog. "Poetic Justice" indeed!

Mr. Atayde, any news regarding the status of Luigi dela Paz? The last time i saw him play was (i think) during the 1st round pa against admu. i believe that he can still bring in instant offense.

Thanks and more power!!!

really great game today for the archers, whew, so now lets wait and see what will be the outcome of sundays game. finally norbert torres showed us he can shoot the ball, and he did so well! jeron gave him the pass and di nya pinahiya si jeron. just hoping that when we have to face admu, he will be that aggressive too! jeron is an all around player and hopefully other players will blend well with him to bring the archers back to glory days...

Is mark tallo still with us?

It was such an entertaining game! :) All smiles throughout the game. I know it's wishful thinking, but they really have a shot against Ateneo. Oh well, as they always say, "bilog ang bola." :) Will always have faith in them. Great article, Sir Tony!

How is de la paz?

Nice one Sir, I am also hoping for an FEU win on Sunday's game, with the same reason as yours.

An NU win will not just bring us to a play-off but will also create a possible protest later if we beat them in the play-off. And that will surely make season 75 a season of PROTESTS.

Can any1 post a video of the practice wid the former Dlsu players? Watching that wud b a dream come true!

Too bad if tallo is starting to fail his academic. But I doubt that's the reason he is not playing.

At one point in the game, the Falcons were already catching up on account of their stifling defense on our playmakers. For some reason, however, they decided to ditch what they were doing and instead, put more emphasis on scoring. That was surprising because they still had more than 10 minutes of playing time left. Why the rush? Had they stayed the course, I think the Falcons could have even ended with a consoling 1-3pt loss to, at least, lessen the sadness of Camson's swan song.

When the Falcons loosened up their defense, we pulled away, naturally. And by the time they decided to clamp down on us again, it was too late as Coach Gee already made the adjustment of using two PGs at the same time.

I hope in the semis we will not forsake defense for offense. We may already be a defense-oriented team but witnessing Adamson's costly oversight up close should emphasize its importance even further. Also, if I am not mistaken, our chances of winning are greater in low scoring contests so it is really foolish for us to engage in a shooting match. Once we find our defensive groove, let's stick to it. Never mind if we score in trickles so long as the production of the other team is in disarray. By the way, our improved defense in the game with Adamson may be due to the increasing involvement of Coach Franz in our bball program again.

Happy trails to Camson and Etrone!

Glad to know that the former Archers still have that Animo burning in them! Despite playing in the PBA, they still relentlessly support the green team. Nice for them to go out of their way to take time and practice with the young athletes! Kudos! :)

I think that the protests arose because of the new technology and policy that allows the refs to review and scrutinize the tapes to ascertain the accuracy and fairness of their calls.

This in itself is good for the league. I have seen many wrong calls corrected (e.g., two-pointers called by the refs as a three, calls on who touched ball last) because of the application of this method of double-checking the tapes.

The question is where to draw the line. If we allow the entire tape to be reviewed and bad calls reversed, that would result in chaos and a spate of protests.

The first time I saw the slow-motion tape of RR's last-sec lay-up, it wasn't clear to me (and I guess to the UAAP Board) if he had released the ball before time ran out. From the angle of the camera, his fingers were still super-imposed over the leather. The refes should have cancelled that shot there and then and placed that game into OT.

Hi Tony, totally psyched for tomorrows game! i truly believe that we need this game as a tune up if we are to face Ateneo in the final 4. Few questions though:

1.) What is Coach Franz's involvement in the DLSU Basket ball team?
2.) Is Luigi Dela Paz still injured?

Hope you can enlighten me. Many thanks!
